Peters - Passion for flavour

24th October 2007 - Three Million Pies Keep Us Warm

The cold spell has seen such a surge in pie eating according to Peter’s Food Service that the company is preparing to bake a whopping 28 million pies over the next two months – that’s around 3.5million a week!

According to technical and retail sales director, David Jackson, the Brits always turn to comforting food as soon as the winter weather sets in.

The biggest seller is mince beef and onion, closely followed by steak and kidney. Another popular flavour is chicken and mushroom.

The increase in sales of the pies – which will be distributed across England and Wales throughout November and December - are also put down to the food’s association with sport.

David said: “We know that people love eating our pies watching rugby or football. Players are also likely to grab one on the way home after a game.”

After Christmas, the number of pies eaten across the nation slows down but picks up again after Valentine’s Day!

David added: “There’s clearly some psychology behind the pie eating habits of our country, but one thing is for sure, we never tire of traditional great British food.”
